Co-enzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) is not classified as a vitamin because it can be made in the body. Co-010 is a vital antioxidant which helps to protect cells from carcinogens and also helps to recycle vitamin E. It is particularly important because of its ability to improve the cells’ use of oxygen. In the final and most significant stage of catabolism, when hydrogen is released during the Krebs cycle to react with oxygen, the actual reaction occurs at an atomic level. The components of these elements — electrons — are passed from one atom to the next in what is called the electron transfer pathway. These electrons, which are tiny charged particles, are highly reactive and need to be very carefully handled. They are like nuclear fuel — a potent but very dangerous energy source. Co-Q10 works by controlling the flow of oxygen, making the production of energy more efficient; it also prevents damage caused by these free radicals.

There is evidence that Co-Q10 levels are lower in people with cancer than those without and that people’s need for it increases when they have the disease. For this reason, researchers are now studying the effects of giving extra Co- Q10 to combat cancer. The first cases to be reported are of women with breast cancer treated in Denmark. Out of 36 women classified as ‘high risk’, as their tumours had spread, six patients showed ‘apparent partial remission’ following the supplementation of 90mg of Co-Q10, together with other antioxidants. An additional three women, treated with 390mg of Co-Q10, had also shown apparent remission.

These results are encouraging and highlight the potential importance of supplementing this nutrient to ensure optimal levels. It is also beneficial in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. No studies have reported toxicity of Co-Q10 even at extremely high doses taken over many years. There is no reason to think that continued supplementation with Co-Q10, as is advised for many vitamins, should have anything but extremely positive results.

Co-Q exists in many foods but not always in a form that we can make use of. There are many different types of Co- Q, from Co-Ql up to Co-Q10. Yeast, for example, contains Co-Q6 and Co-Q7. Only Co-Q10 is found in human tissue. It is this form that is effective in the ways described above and it is the only form that should be supplemented. However, we can utilise ‘lower’ forms of Co-Q and convert them into Co-Q10. This conversion process, which occurs in the liver, allows us to make use of the Co-Q found in almost all foods.

But in some people, especially the elderly, the ability to convert lower forms of Co-Q into the active Co-Q10 is impaired or non-existent. Exactly why and to what extent this occurs is not known at the present time. But for these people, Co-Q10 is effectively an essential nutrient. In other words, the body needs to be given a supply of it as opposed to being able to make it, which is probably why so many people are deficient in it.

Some foods contain relatively more Co-Q10, and these foods are our best dietary sources of Co-Q. These include all meat and fish (especially sardines), eggs, spinach, broccoli, alfalfa, potato, soya beans and soya oil, wheat (especially wheatgerm), rice bran, buckwheat, millet, and most beans, nuts and seeds.

Today many supplement companies produce Co-Q10 products. The ideal dosage is 10-90mg a day. It is best absorbed in an oil-soluble form.
